HCMC population breaks 7 million
Compiled by Thuy Hang

The latest census statistics released Friday by Ho Chi Minh City found that the southern city’s population hit 7.123 million people, up 2 million in the 10 years since the last census was conducted.

The figure exceeded the previous forecast that the country’s largest city would grow to 7 million by 2010. Rural migrants flocking to the city to work was the chief driver of the population growth.

However, the census also showed that the natural population growth rate was down by 1.27 percent.

The city has a sex ratio of 93 males for every 100 females, compared to the country’s 98 to 100.

On average, 3,400 people live on one square kilometer of land in HCMC. The density population in the inner districts is five times higher than that of the suburban districts, with the most populous being Binh Tan District and the least populous being Can Gio District.

General Statistics Office deputy chief, Do Thuc, said HCMC’s population may reach 10 million within the next 10 years if steps aren’t taken to curb growth.

According to HCMC Development Studies Institute, loosened policies on residence and land are the main factors behind the increasing population, which is placing pressure on the city’s public transport and infrastructure systems.

HCMC People’s Committee deputy chairman, Nguyen Thanh Tai, said based on the results of the census, the city will propose changes in residence policies to the government.
