The Ministry of Health has forecast that Vietnam still has a latent risk of a cholera outbreak if strong prevention measures are not taken properly.
"Cholera bacterium tests have showed increased results of poisonous strength," said Nguyen Van Binh from the Ministry of Health at a meeting of the Steering Committee for Influenza Pandemic Prevention on Wednesday.
"It is noticeable that cholera bacterium are usually found in mollusks living in both brackish water and fresh water," he said.
Health experts have also said the risk of a cholera outbreak has risen as a result of increasing international exchanges, unhygienic food, and untreated canal water.
According to statistics from the ministry, Vietnam has had a total of 69 cholera-positive cases but no fatality this year. Scattered occurrences of cholera-positive cases have been reported in the Mekong Delta province of Ben Tre.
Since May 19, the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology has also reported a dysentery outbreak with a total 140 infected cases in four hamlets of Duc Hanh Commune of Cao Bang northern province.
Duc Hanh is a mountainous commune with a majority Mong ethnic population.
