Cable-stayed bridge to open in Mekong Delta
Tuoi Tre

The cable-stayed Can Tho Bridge crossing over the Hau River in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho will open to traffic Saturday.

The bridge will connect Vinh Long Province and Can Tho City, approximately 170 km south of Ho Chi Minh City.

The bridge was designed and built by Japanese contractors. The 2.75 kilometer long bridge is the longest cable-stayed bridge in Vietnam.

The bridge is expected to replace the ferry system that currently runs along National Road No. 1A, cutting travel time by 32 minutes.

It is estimated that some 20,000 vehicles and tens of thousands of passengers use the ferry system everyday.

The construction cost was estimated at US$342 million.

The project is funded by Official Development Assistance (ODA) from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Vietnamese government.

The bridge has become famous after was a bridge span collapsed in September 2007, killing 54 workers and injured 80 workers and engineers.

It was the worst-ever construction accident in Vietnam.

Work on the bridge was resumed in July, 2008.
