A three-year-old girl died of bird flu in a Ho Chi Minh City hospital Wednesday, becoming the second human death in Vietnam this year.

The girl, who hailed from neighboring Binh Duong Province, was admitted to Children’s Hospital 2 a week earlier with high fever and cough.

Tests showed she was infected with the A/H5N1 strain of bird flu.

Doctors said the child's house is near a poultry and wet market.

The first bird-flu death this year was that of a 38-year-old woman from the Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang, who died February 23.

Vietnamese health authorities have reported 115 cases of bird flu since 2003, including 59 deaths.

According to the World Health Organization, the country’s death toll is the second-highest in the world behind Indonesia’s 135.

Last year five people contracted the disease in Vietnam and all of them died.
