One more road to link Vietnam, Thailand
Tuoi Tre

The Ministry of Transport has approved the construction of a US$440 million road in the Mekong Delta which will link up with a 1,000 km international corridor in Cambodia connecting Thailand and Vietnam.

The 220 km road will pass through the Mekong Delta provinces of Ca Mau – on Vietnam’s southern tip -- and Kien Giang where five highways, including the north-south National Highway 1, will be linked with it.

Its construction will be funded by loans from the Asian Development Bank and the Republic of Korea, non-refundable aid from Australia, and matching funds from the Vietnamese government.

Work is expected to start in March.

Kien Giang Province authorities said they have sped up land clearance for the project and have completed 80 percent of it, adding around 1,000 families would be relocated.

The Ca Mau Province Department of Transport said 1,064 households would be moved and paid an estimated VND497 billion ($26.7 million) in compensation.

Both governments said people are “happy” with the relocation since they expect the belt road would help tap the economic and tourism potential of the two provinces.
