Mekong Delta gold smugglers arrested
Tuoi Tre

Police in the Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang have arrested eight people for smuggling 92 kilograms of gold they seized from a car on the way to Ho Chi Minh City Feb 4.

The gold was found in a seven-seat Ford Everest and had no documents to show origin, the police said.

Officers arrested the driver and three other passengers, who confessed they had been hired by a man in nearby An Giang Province to carry the gold -- 92 bars, each weighing a kilogram -- to a jeweler’s in HCMC.

They later took in the two alleged owners of the contraband goods who regularly buy gold along the Cambodian border and sell them to jewelry shops in HCMC’s District 5.

Two others have also been arrested for allegedly buying the consignment.

In Vietnam 92 kilograms or 2,450 taels (37.5 grams) of gold is worth around VND63.7 billion ($3.4 million) at current prices.
