A bridge spanning across the Saigon River in the southern hub opened to traffic on Sunday.
The 1.25 km Thu Thiem Bridge, linking Ho Chi Minh City’s District 2 and Binh Thanh District near downtown District 1, has six lanes for vehicles.
Work on the bridge, costing an estimated VND1.47 trillion (US$80 million), started in April 2005.
The project, including the Thu Thiem four-lane tunnel, is expect to ease transport load on the Saigon River, and cut travel time from suburban areas to downtown HCMC.
It is also a link between the existing downtown of HCMC with Thu Thiem New Urban Area in District 2.
Implemented by a consortium of Vietnamese contractors, the Thu Thiem Bridge was also dubbed as one of the most delayed projects in HCMC due to a shortage of cash.
