Vietnam attends UN crime conference
Tuoi Tre, VNA

Vietnam called on global nations to gear up to fight crimes like human trafficking, child abuse, and cyber crime at the 12th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice that was held from April 12 to 19 in Brazil.

The 100 countries attending the event also mentioned drug-related crimes as a global threat.

Members said they are greatly concerned by the impact of organized crime on human rights, rule of law, and security and development, and its links with other criminal and, in some cases, terrorist activities.

“Organized crime has become a business with macroeconomic dimensions, comparable to the national income of many countries and the turnover of the world’s largest corporations,” said Antonio Maria Costa, the executive director of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime.

The delegates also called for greater international cooperation, including mutual legal assistance, sharing of information, adoption of extradition frameworks, and training collaboration, to upgrade the capacity of national authorities to disrupt illicit activity and bring criminals to justice.

The UN revealed that organized criminal gangs kill almost half a million people a year, 10 times the death toll in military conflicts.

The meeting concluded with a call for member states to adapt their criminal justice systems to changing times by using new technologies to combat both traditional threats and emerging ones like cyber- and environment-related crime.
