Domestic air carrier Vietnam Airlines and Jetstar Pacific Tuesday resumed services to central and Central Highlands’ destinations after being unable to land on Monday due to typhoon Mirinae.
Vietnam Airlines spokesman Le Hoang Dung told The Saigon Times Daily on Tuesday the national flag carrier had resumed flights since Tuesday morning, except for Nha Trang and Quy Nhon, where flooding was still severe.
Dung said the roads leading to the airport in Quy Nhon Province were still submerged, making it difficult for staff and passengers to get to the airport.
It caused the airline to delay the resumption of its service until Tuesday afternoon.
Typhoon Mirinae, the eleventh storm to hit Vietnam so far this year, slammed into Vietnam’s central coastal region on Monday, destroying local infrastructure and bringing traffic to a standstill in some areas.
It forced Vietnam Airlines to cancel 50 flights from Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi to the central cities of Danang, Nha Trang, Vinh and Hue and Central Highlands Dalat and Buon Ma Thuot.
The cancellations affected the travel schedules of nearly 4,800 passengers.
Dung said the carrier were arranging available seats on the newly-resumed routes for the affected passengers and also offering refunds.
The airline also added four extra flights from Hanoi and HCMC to Nha Trang on Wednesday to help buttress overloaded capacity.
Also on Monday, low-cost carrier Jetstar Pacific, Vietnam’s second biggest airline, cancelled two return flights between HCMC to Danang and diverted one flight to the Phu Bai Airport in nearby Hue from Danang Airport.
The airline’s representative, Tran Hoang Linh, said the 100 passengers on each cancelled flight to the central cities would be able to register their seats on the resumed flights or receive refunds on the tickets.
The budget airline resumed five daily flights from Hanoi and HCMC to Danang and Hue Tuesday but did not add more flights on the route.
The two largest air carriers in Vietnam also had to call off more than 40 flights in late September after typhoon Ketsana swept through parts of the Central and Central Highlands regions.
