Vietnam Airlines has cut out several Ho Chi Minh City-based tour operators from its discount program after they failed to pass them on to customers last year.
Last year the carrier had offered a 60 percent discount on certain domestic routes to 30 travel firms under a program to stimulate domestic tourism but only eight of them offered budget tours.
They are Saigontourist, Young Generation Travel, Fiditourist, LuaVietTours, Youth Group Travel, Youth Travel, Saigon Tourism Petroleum Services One Member Ltd (SPSC Tour), and Carnival Tour.
Nguyen Thi Viet Thu, deputy head of ticket sales and reservation at the airline’s southern regional office, said the eight travel firms can only sell the cheap tickets to tourists and not share them with other firms in the stimulus program.
This year the program has 19 tour companies participating.
But the airline is willing to extend the discounts to the other 11 firms too if they offer tours at lower prices, she said.
The promotional tickets provided by Vietnam Airlines since last month have allowed some of the companies to offer package tours to the northern and central regions at discounts of 30 to 35 percent.
The program will go on until the end of this year.
