Carrier starts new HCMC-Phu Quoc service
Tuoi Tre

Vietnam Airlines has announced the launch of a new service between Ho Chi Minh City and Phu Quoc Island via Can Tho starting March 28.

The carrier will use 65-seat ATR 72 aircraft for the five weekly flights in either direction.

Passengers from HCMC will have to wait for 40 minutes in Can Tho before boarding a second flight to Phu Quoc, Vietnam’s largest island. Both flights will take 45 minutes.

The airline is offering a promotional one-way fare of VND304,000 (almost U$16) on the new route for travel between March 28 and May 31 but excluding the period from April 28 to May 4.

The promotion will be available until April 5.

Vietnam Airlines already flies between the southern metro and the island and did not offer an explanation for introducing the new service.

The carrier, which flies to 20 domestic and more than 40 international destinations, hopes to carry 11 million passengers this year, up 18 percent from 2009.

Phu Quoc is a popular tourist destination in the Gulf of Thailand off the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang.

The lush, 593-square-kilometer tropical paradise is also known as Pearl Island for its pearl industry. The island is set to become one of Vietnam’s hottest tourism centers under a government plan.
