Vietnam Airlines slashed fares on several domestic routes by 50 percent Monday for Ho Chi Minh City-based tour operators who had taken part in a tourism stimulus program launched last year in HCMC
The travel companies include Young Generation Travel Company, the Saigontourist Travel Service Company, Tan Dinh Trade and Travel Service Company, and the Saigon Petroleum Service Corporation.
The promotion, to last until the end of this year, is aimed at stimulating the domestic travel segment which reported a 19 percent rise last year to 25 million travelers.
This helped the tourism industry maintain growth and offset a decline of 11 percent in international arrivals.
The discount will be available to groups of at least 10 travelers booking tours through these firms at least 15 days in advance.
The lower fares would allow the travel companies to offer discounts of up to 35 percent on package tours, Young Generation’s deputy director, Tran The Dung, told Tuoi Tre.
But the discount will not be available on public holidays, including the Hung Kings' death anniversary in April (based on the lunar calendar), Reunification Day on April 30, May Day on May 1, and National Day on September 2.
Round tickets from HCMC to Hanoi and Vinh will cost VND1.8 million ($98), exclusive of VAT.
They will cost VND1 million from HCMC to Danang and Hue in the low season and VND1.2 million in summer.
Vietnam Airlines also plans to adopt a new domestic fare structure from March 10 which will have 14 price levels instead of the current 12.
It follows approval from the Ministry of Transport to raise fare ceilings to improve airlines’ pricing flexibility.
A one-way ticket between Hanoi and HCMC will range from VND860,000 to VND1.818 million.
Also from March 10 the Vietnam Air Services Co, a subsidiary of Vietnam Airlines, will hike fares between HCMC and Con Dao Island, Quang Nam Province, Tuy Hoa city, and Ca Mau Province.
The fare from HCMC to Chu Lai Airport in Quang Nam Province will now be VND1.3 million instead of VND1.152 million.
On the other three routes, the fare will go up from VND838,000 now to VND950,000.
