Low cost carrier Viva Macau is considering opening a direct route between Hanoi and Macau following two years of flights between the gambling giant and Ho Chi Minh City.
The airline’s general director Reginald MacDonald told Thoi Bao Kinh Te Sai Gon Online (Saigon Economics Times Online) that Viva Macau was looking at demand between Macau and the capital city after opening its new ticket office at the five-star Sheraton Saigon Hotel & Towers in HCMC.
The plan for the new route will be considered based on the number of new aircrafts Viva Macau will receive in the next few months, according to MacDonald.
The Macau-based airline is currently using 245-seat Boeing 767 aircrafts to operate daily flights between Macau and Vietnam’s southern hub.
In July this year, the budget carrier raised the number of flights on the route from four to seven a week to meet increased demand.
MacDonald said Viva Macau was also planning to offer flights between HCMC and Japan and Australia via Macau.
The carrier would start flying twice a week between Macau and the Australian city of Melbourne from December 9 and the Japanese city of Sapporo from December 19, the general director said.
Viva Macau is also offering the promotional fares from US$49 for one-way flight between Macau and HCMC until December 11 to mark the second anniversary of the route.
The carrier enjoyed 20 percent growth on the HCMC-Macau route in the first half of this year.
Macau, a former Portuguese colony, now governed by China, has become a popular destination for Vietnamese tourists.
