Irish music shows to raise funds for autism, HIV
Hanoi Grapevines

A group of five artists from Ireland and the US will perform predominantly traditional Irish music and dance at shows in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi this month to raise funds for autistic children and people with HIV/AIDS.

The All Star Irish Traditional Music and Dance Concert will feature Mick Moloney, John Murphy, and Frank Crocker from Ireland and Athena Tergis, an American violinist who specializes in traditional Irish music.

They will perform traditional Irish tunes and contemporary music on the violin, banjo, mandolin, and guitar and be accompanied by the former All-Ireland and world champion dancer Niall O'Leary.

The first concert will be held at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in HCMC on May 23 followed by the other at the Youth Theater in Hanoi on May 25.

Entrance to the shows is free but audiences can make a donation to the Hanoi Club for Parents of Children with Autism and the Life Center, a non governmental organization working for HIV/AIDS prevention in HCMC.

The concerts are organized by the Irish embassy in Hanoi and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s Performing Arts Department.

Vietnam has 157,000 people with HIV, of whom around 34,400 have developed AIDS. More than 44,000 have died so far.

Exact figures of children with autism are unavailable but health officials say the number is increasing.

Nearly 1,800 kids came to the National Hospital of Pediatrics for autism treatment last year, a figure that has doubled every year since 2007.
