Dutchman to wield baton for HCMC orchestra

Dutch conductor Jan Stulen will collaborate with members of the Ho Chi Minh City Ballet Symphony Orchestra and Opera for a European themed symphony concert in HCMC Sunday to mark Europe Day, May 9.

They will perform Austrian composer Franz Schubert’s “Overture Rosamunde,” his countryman’s Franz Joseph Haydn’s “Symphonie Concertante for violin, cello, oboe and bassoon,” and German composer Johannes Brahms’ “Symphony No. 4 in E minor, Op. 98.”

Stulen, who was born in Amsterdam in 1942, studied conducting and the piano and violin at the Amsterdam Conservatory of Music. He has given a large number of public performances with works ranging from Bach to contemporary and jazz.

Stulen has appeared as a guest conductor with orchestras in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany, the UK, Italy, Sweden, Egypt, Greece, South Korea, Turkey, Denmark, Hungary, and Rumania.

The concert, organized by the Dutch consulate in the city, will start at 8pm at the HCMC Opera House, at 7, Lam Son Square, District 1.

Tickets costing VND100,000 (US$5.28), VND150,000, and VND200,000 are available at the venue.

Europe Day will be marked by “Europe Days” in Vietnam, a month-long celebration featuring 10 cultural events to be held around the country this month.

It will feature a European film festival, a jazz concert, symphony concerts, and a European food festival, in Hanoi, HCMC, the central city of Danang, and the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho.

The event is organized by the Delegation of the European Union and the embassies of the 27 EU members.
