Vietnam ranked third in Asia behind India and the Philippines in a survey of how passionate young people are about music.

The Branded and Synovate Music Matters survey, released on June 3, looked at young people’s attitude toward music and what music-related activities they engaged in.

Global market research company Synovate interviewed 8,841 people aged 15 to 24 in China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, the territory of Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam, Vietnam News Agency reported.

Two thirds of all respondents said music was an important part of their lives and they spent a considerable amount of time listening to music.

On a national breakdown, Indian youths topped the list, with 83 percent responding in this manner, followed by Filipino people with 80 percent and Vietnam with 77 percent.

The survey also revealed that more Asian youth are now using multiple devices, including computers, MP3 players and cell phones to listen to music.

Half of young mobile phone owners use their cell phones to listen to music. Vietnam was placed fourth in the list after Thailand, Hong Kong and China.

But 52 percent of young Vietnamese chose the computer as their top choice to listen to music, the highest rate in the region, followed by Taiwan with 50 percent and Malaysia with 47 percent.

The survey results were announced at the 2009 Music Matters Asia Pacific Music Forum in Hong Kong.

Synovate is the market research arm of marketing communications group Aegis Group, which conducts market research in more than 60 countries.
