HANOI - Vietnam's economic growth in the first half of this year will be better than expected and could top 6 percent compared with a year earlier, a minister said on Wednesday.
"It is expected that for the first six months of the year economic growth will be higher than expected, maybe higher than 6 percent," Minister of Planning and Investment Vo Hong Phuc said at a business forum for aid donors and trade groups.
Gross domestic product grew 5.83 percent in the first quarter from a year earlier. Last year first-half growth was 3.9 percent.
The government is targeting growth of 6.5 percent this year, but Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said in January the economy could expand as much as 7 percent.
