Duty-free shopping rules eased at border zone
Tuoi Tre

The Moc Bai Border Economic Zone on the Vietnam-Cambodia border has relaxed its rules to allow locals and foreigners to buy duty-free goods worth VND500,000 (US$27) per day instead of the earlier week.

The managers of the zone situated in Tay Ninh Province told Tuoi Tre that all taxes would be levied on purchases exceeding the limit.

Also from March 1 shoppers aged below 18 cannot buy alcohol or tobacco, while even those above 18 can only buy VND500,000 worth of these products per month.

The Moc Bai Border Economic Zone is located around 70 kilometers northwest of Ho Chi Minh City and 170 kilometers from the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh.

The zone saw many shops close last year following the government’s ban on Vietnamese passport-holders buying duty-free goods at border economic zones last July.

Vietnamese tourists had been the zones’ major customers.

As a result, the government lifted the ban, allowing supermarkets and shops at the border zones to continue selling duty-free to locals until 2012.

Moc Bai attracts 10,000 visitors a day.
