Vietnam Airlines to fly direct between Hanoi, Osaka
VNA

National flag carrier Vietnam Airlines is planning to launch direct flights between Hanoi and Osaka on January 13 next year.

The airline announced on Friday it would operate five flights a week on the route on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays and Sundays, Vietnam News Agency reported.

The opening of the new route comes as Japan’s flag carrier Japan Airlines International suspends its service on the route on January 12, 2010 due to financial reasons.

The route is also the fourth direct route connecting Hanoi with Japan and the eighth air route between the two countries conducted by Vietnam Airlines.

Earlier this year, Vietnam Airlines also announced its plan to open a direct service between Osaka and central Danang City next year.

When the Hanoi-Osaka route comes into operation, the carrier will operate 33 weekly flights connecting Vietnam with four major Japanese cities, including Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka and Nagoya.

Vietnam Airlines currently accounts for 50 percent of the market share of the direct flights between Japan and Vietnam which are currently operated by three carriers.

Last year, Vietnam Airlines carried 670,000 Japanese passengers, accounting for 8.1 percent of its total number of passengers.
