Flagship carrier Vietnam Airlines Tuesday opened its first European representative office in Paris, France, a move aimed at expanding its network in the continent.
The opening of the new facility is also part of the airline’s strategy to advertise its image to European markets in preparation for its entrance into global airline alliance SkyTeam, the second largest airline alliance in the world, in June this year.
The office will help manage and assist the carrier’s other branches and representative offices, ticket agents in handling business operations related to the European market, not including Russia.
Head of the new representative office Le Dung told Vietnam News Agency revenues from flights to and from the European region accounted for nearly 20 percent of the airline’s total turnover and 30 percent of its total income from operating international routes.
In October last year, the largest carrier of Vietnam also increased its flight frequency between France and Vietnam from six to eight flights a week and five to six trips a week between the country and Germany.
The carrier is also planning to add one extra weekly flight to the routes connecting Vietnam and the two European countries.
Vietnam Airlines’ network extends to 20 cities throughout the country and 40 international destinations in the U.S., Europe, Australia and Asia.
Last year, it posted a year-on-year growth of 6.64 percent in the number of travelers using its service to more than 9.3 million travelers.
The carrier has targeted to serve 11 million passengers this year.
