Supermarket chain Big C, a subsidiary of French retailer Casino Group, will open its tenth Vietnam-based outlet in Hanoi next Tuesday, a move aimed at expanding its network in the growing Southeast Asian market.
The Big C The Garden, the second Big C supermarket in Hanoi, will be located at the Garden Trade Center in Tu Liem District, Thoi Bao Kinh Te Sai Gon Online (Saigon Economic Times Online) reported.
The 3,700 square meter facility will stock more than 20,000 varieties of merchandise ranging from food, household utensils to cosmetics.
With an investment capital of US$3 million the outlet is a project of Casino Group and the Thang Long GTC Ltd. Co., a leading tourism, services and import-export company in Hanoi.
Big C The Garden will provide employment for about 400 local laborers.
The chain is also seeking quality Vietnamese goods to sell through its outlets across the globe.
About 95 percent of the merchandise sold in Big C supermarkets in Vietnam is locally made, Vietnam News Agency reported.
Casino Group, one of Europe’s biggest retailers, has more than 9,500 Big C outlets in Vietnam, Thailand, Argentina, Uruguay, Venezuela, Brazil, Colombia, the Netherlands and France.
The chain opened its first store in Vietnam in 1998 and now has outlets in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, the central city of Hue, Hai Phong in the north and the central seaside city of Danang.
Vietnam currently has more than 1,000 convenience stores, 250 supermarkets and trade centers compared to more than 9,000 traditional markets and about 250,000 retail venues of other types.
The country was named the sixth most attractive emerging market destination for retail investment in the world last year by management consulting firm A.T. Kearney.
