National flag carrier Vietnam Airlines Wednesday increased its weekly service between Vietnam and France from six to eight flights, confirming its plan for further expansion into the European market.
This is also the first time in the carrier’s history that two Boeing 777 air crafts would fly every Wednesday from Paris’ largest airport, the Charles de Gaulle Airport, to Vietnam’s two major hubs, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
Le Dung, chief representative for the airline in Paris told Vietnam News Agency, the carrier’s decision to add extra flights on the route to prepare for the economic rebound in Europe.
The move was also made to prepare for the carrier’s entrance into global airline alliance SkyTeam next year, he said. The alliance has ten members from the U.S., China, South Korea and offers its 462 million annual passengers a worldwide system of more than 16,700 daily flights covering 905 destinations in 169 countries.
Vietnam Airlines’ total revenue from European markets reached 165 million euros (US$244.86 million) last year, up 20 percent from 2007.
In France alone, its revenue rose 24 percent with average seat occupancy of 87 percent.
Vietnam Airlines currently operates regular flights to three European countries, including France, Germany and Russia but the carrier has expanded its ticket outlet system to almost every country in central and north-western Europe, including Britain and Northern Ireland.
