Rural trade fairs prop up domestic consumption
Tuoi Tre

With exports suffering and a massive trade deficit to contend with, Vietnam is trying to ratchet up domestic consumption by running trade fairs and promotions in the long overlooked remote rural parts of the country.

The trade fair idea came down from the very top of Vietnam’s political machinations, the Politburo and was co organized by Tuoi Tre newspaper, the Business Studies and Assistance Association (BSA) and mild producer, Vinamilk.

Nine trade fairs have been held this year in northern Bac Giang province; central Khanh Hoa province; and the southern provinces of An Giang, Tra Vinh, Ben Tre, Vinh Long and Binh Duong.

The fairs last for several days and feature local manufacturers joining together to transport their goods to the far-flung parts of the country.

On average, each firm brought in almost VND100 million (US$5,600) in daily sales receipts from the fairs, according to the BSA director Vu Kim Hanh.
